Japan day 12

Once more we had to be up early for a train ride. Once more the group wasn’t too good at this, however the incentive of an additional price incurred for not checking out before 10 was good enough encouragement for most. We got on our way and it decided to rain while some other got some food for the trip. Boarding the train and just generally being more organised has become much better and more efficient recently with every successive time doing it, and before we knew it we had arrived in Hiroshima. The train station at least was very modern and subverted my expectations quite a bit. It’s easy to think of Hiroshima as nothing more than an old historical place that holds a story of a bombing rather than a regular functioning city with over a million occupants.

Before going anywhere, our group whose collective addictive personalities could see them collecting limited edition pet rocks went into a Pokémon store, while I directed beanie’s attention to a cool looking bakery. Holy. Fucking. Shit. This was the best pastry I had ever consumed in my entire life. I got a mozzarella and presto mini pizza thingy, and an apple pie and I was in bliss. I can’t even begin to describe it, other than really really quite not bad at all. The others had some and we went to check into our hotel which was only a few meters away. Once again, stepping into this place was shocking! The roof was probably 4 stories above us, there was a fountain coming down marble stairs. I shuddered to imagine how I’d pay back my parents for this hotel alone.

We checked in our luggage before going beanie led us down the scenic route towards peace park, where we saw the remanence of the building at the epicentre of the nuclear blast. It was amazing to see it standing and also shocking. We all sat down by the river and admired the beauty of the area before going to visit the main museum itself. I’m by no stretch of the imagination a fan of museums and reading, but this was an eye opening and important experience. A story of a girl who was born after the bomb who developed leukaemia and died at the age of I think 12 brought a tear to my eye. After our time at the museum we took a tram back to our hotel. They were similar to trams back home, although conveniently these ones took cash.

We went to dinner at a strange place. We took an elevator up to the 6th floor of a dodgy looking building. The entire floor was filled with 10s of the exact same type of restaurant. They were like the ones where they have the grill and cook and entertain people, but finding a seat was difficult as they were almost all booked out. We eventually ended up at one run by a Japanese lady who spoke good English with an American accent. All the food was like a crepe with noodles on top and some other toppings on top. I had one with burnt cheese and it was good, although it did come with some egg. I decided to try some, and wasn’t a fan, but I still ate most of the food which was quite yummy. Jason and Linus convinced her that I was an excellent singer and tried to get me to sing at the table, but ironically I’m not confident at singing in smaller crowds.

We then left, Harry Toby beanie and I went to another lawsons and got some more food and then went to watch some jjk. It’s a difficult show to watch when you’re tired because the subtitles are all that keep you on track with what’s happening, and it’s difficult to keep up when you’re eyes are half closed.
